Breast Reconstruction Surgery Via DIEP Flap Method:

Sufficient abdominal fat is the main requirement for a patient to have a reconstructive breast surgery using the DIEP flap method. The deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) is the main blood vessel instrumental in this type of breast surgery.

Due to the procedures involved, DIEP flap breast reconstruction surgery also involves a tummy tuck surgery. Skin, blood vessels and fat from the lower abdominal area is harvested and transplanted in the breast tissue, resulting in a reduction in the tummy size.

The perforators occurring in the muscles in the abdomen are removed and connected with those in the breast area. The muscles are left undisturbed and intact, and are allowed to preserve their strength.

Classified as a microsurgery (due to the use of microscopes), DIEP flap breast reconstruction surgery takes plastic surgeons a longer time to perform than a TRAM flap surgery. A minimum of 8 hours is the normal time if reconstruction of both the breasts is involved.

Plastic surgeons at the Plastic Surgery Institute of California are acquainted with various reconstructive breast surgery procedures. Free flap breast reconstructive surgery procedures like the DIEP flap are complicated operations and we recommend that you discuss your options with a certified and trained plastic surgeon.
